Content of exhibit

The notable features of the giant oarfish are its extremely long, thin, silvery body with red dorsal fin and pectoral fins. Most of its ecology is poorly known.
The Okinawa Churashima Foundation that manages Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium received a deceased male and female giant oarfish that were by-catch from a fixed net off the coast of Yomitan, at the end of January 2019. By combining eggs and sperm extracted from the deceased giant oarfish, artificial fertilization took place, and the fertilized eggs successfully hatched!

Although the tiny fish that hatched from the eggs were reared for a short amount of time, we were able to witness these rare creatures, and now we would like to share the footage gathered during that time.
Please take this opportunity to view the footage.
