Rare threetooth puffers exhibited in the deep-sea corner!
It has been 6 years since the last exhibit of a threetooth puffer at Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium.
≪ウチワフグ≫
Scientific name:Triodon macropterus
This species of pufferfish is found across the Indo-Pacific at depths from 100 to 300 meters.
This deep-sea creature doesn’t easily adapt to changes in water pressure, so it is extremely
rare for live specimens to be exhibited. However, with the help of local fisherman, it has
now been successfully exhibited for the first time in 6 years.
More well-known species of pufferfish inflate their stomach like a balloon, but this species
inflates its stomach outwards like a fan. This is thought to protect the fish from predators by
making their body appear larger.
Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium [Journey to the Deep Sea World]
Until the end of May 2019 (Currently Scheduled)
※Exhibit may close depending on the condition of the animal.
Five individuals, Body length 20cm
The individuals exhibited were collected in February 2019 by fishermen in the waters
around the main island of Okinawa at a depth of around 200 meters.
To be able to see a single living threetooth puffer is extremely rare, and it is even rarer to
see several individuals! They can only be seen at Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium. Please take
this opportunity to visit and see the threetooth puffers.
If you are lucky, maybe you will have the chance to see the moment it expands its belly flap
like you see in the photo!!
