Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium is pleased to announce the exhibit of a dirty ordure snapper an extremely rare species in Okinawan waters.
The dirty ordure snapper is a species of snapper in the genus Paracaesio. In Japan, it inhabits the waters of the Ogasawara Islands, Kushimoto in Wakayama Prefecture, and the Ryukyu Islands. Its body is darker than its close relative the Japanese snapper. In the Okinawan language it is called hinga-shichu meaning dirty Japanese snapper. Because of that, in 1962, it was suggested to be named yogore ao dai in Japanese (dirty Japanese snapper).
This individual was collected in October 2024 offshore of Okinawa Main Island at a depth of 100 meters. The dirty ordure snapper is extremely rare in Okinawa Prefecture and is very difficult to rear. Our first successful exhibit of this species was possible because immediately after delivery to this aquarium, it was placed in a gravity pressure compression chamber to prevent decompression injuries and infection.
We hope you enjoy the beautiful indigo color of the dirty ordure snapper.
