Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium puts a lot of effort into encouraging breeding of the animals at the aquarium.
We are exhibiting a selection of animals that were born in this aquarium for Children’s Day.
Take the opportunity to see these special children which are difficult to see in the wild.
Zebra shark
Scientific name:Stegostoma fasciatum
Numbers of individuals : four individuals, Length of juvenile approximately 40 cm
Hatched on October 2018. Juveniles have black and white stripes, but adults look completely different.
The adult zebra shark is currently exhibited in the Kuroshio Sea tank.
Bigfin reef squid
Scientific name:Sepioteuthis lessoniana
Numbers of individuals:twelve individuals、Length of mantle of juvenile is approximately 3cm
Hatched in March 2019. Right after hatching from the egg, it feeds on small krill. Although small, it has the same physiology as its parents and it even can squirt ink.
Ryukyu ayu-fish
Scientific name:Plecoglossus altivelis ryukyuensis
Numbers of individuals:About one hundred individuals、Total length of juvenile is approximately 4 cm
Born through our captive breeding program in January 2019.
After hatching, its body was slender and transparent with no scales, however, as it grew, little by little it started to look like an ayu-fish.
Okinawa green tree frog
Scientific name:Rhacophorus viridis
Numbers of individuals:About thirty individuals、Total length of juvenile approximately 2cm
Hatched in February 2019.
By the end of March, it changed from a tadpole to a frog and eventually moved onto dry land.
