Deepwater triggerfish
Scientific name: Rhinecanthus abyssus

This is a rare species of triggerfish that inhabits deep waters (depths around 150 meters). Part of its body is lemon color and it has three distinctive black lines between its eyes. Its ecology is poorly known due to so few cases of this fish being caught.

The deepwater triggerfish on display was caught at a depth of 150 meters off the main Island of Okinawa during fishing conducted by the Churaumi Aquarium in March 2020. This species is extremely rare globally, with very few cases of it being collected. We are hopeful that through rearing this species we can discover more about its ecology. Watch as the abyssal triggerfish actively swims around the tank looking for food.
