On August 1st 2020, Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium will renew its Freshwater Life area on the 2nd floor to a new exhibit titled “Ryukyu Arc Riverside.” This is part of a process of renewal as we move towards the 20th anniversary of the aquarium opening in 2022.
In the “Ryukyu Arc Riverside” area, the forest and estuarine environments of the Ryukyu Arc will be recreated centered around a 4-meter-wide tank.
※The Ryukyu Arc is the stretch of islands from Kagoshima’s Amami Islands to Okinawa, and on to the Yaeyama Islands.
In this tank, fish such as Ryukyu ayu-fish and tropical carp-gudgeon, which the aquarium has conserved and bred are exhibited. The display focuses on the rare freshwater fish found in Okinawa.
As well as tank exhibits, there will be wall panels introducing the results of studies of these rare creatures that were conducted by the Okinawa Churashima Foundation which manages Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium.
We hope you enjoy this relaxing view of an Okinawan riverside.

The summer there is a special event of exhibition panels asking, “Is this how Okinawa’s nature should be?" It will be held during the opening of the Ryukyu Arc Riverside area.
Using specimens and panels the exhibition will consider the current condition of Okinawan nature including endemic species and rare species, and issues of invasive species and ocean trash.
In addition to the opening of the “Ryukyu Arc Riverside” area, the aquarium has prepared original artwork of the creatures on exhibit for coloring.
Enjoy coloring the pictures using your favorite colors.
