Baby deep-sea pram bugs were born in the Small Life in the Deep Sea exhibit at Churaumi Aquarium.
The deep-sea pram bug is a crustacean that reaches three centimeters in length. It swims and floats in the sea, and preys on salps. After eating the salp’s internal organs, a pram bug moves inside the salp’s outer skin, then lays its eggs. The young pram bugs grow within the salp.

Adults: 3 individuals (about 30mm)
Juveniles: 15 individuals (about 5mm)
Baby deep-sea pram bugs grew inside the salp, then emerged at the end of June. They have already shed their skin several times, and reached 5mm in length. They look like smaller versions of the adults.
Churaumi Aquarium has been successful at the long-term care of this species, but this is the first time to display the young pram bugs.
Come see these baby deep-sea pram bugs and follow their growth.
