Caution! Increase in bite-wound injuries from white-banded triggerfish during their breeding season

White-banded triggerfish
Scientific name:Rhinecanthus aculeatus

White-banded triggerfish are relatively common in the Okinawan inoh (shallow lagoons inside the reef edge). Their breeding season runs from July to September, and during this time they aggressively defend their territory, and occasionally attack nearby swimmers. They have very hard teeth that can break apart the tough shells of crustaceans such as shrimps and crabs. If a person is bitten, the bite may puncture the skin and cause bleeding.

White-banded triggerfish are on display in the Life in the Inoh tank

White-banded triggerfish are exhibited in the Life in the Inoh tank, which is the first tank after entering the aquarium. As it is currently the breeding season of the white-banded triggerfish, take this opportunity to safely observe them in the tank, and if you encounter them in the ocean when swimming, do not get close to them.
※Exhibit may close depending on the condition of the animal.
