Birth of a blotchy swell shark (Cephaloscyllium umbratile)

A blotchy swell shark has been born at the Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium.

Scientific name:Cephaloscyllium umbratile

This deep-sea shark reaches 1.2 meters in length. Its body is stocky and thick with a distinctive large mouth. Pups have dark brown stripes, while adults have blotchy patches. It is an egg-laying species, laying two eggs at once, its eggs hatch after 9 to 13 months.

Size of Exhibit

One Female individual, approximately 20 cm in length

 

The egg was laid in November 2017, and kept in water at a temperature of 14 degrees until it hatched in December 2018. Gestation took 13 months.
The baby blotchy swell shark has eaten krill for the first time and is growing well.
