Proceed with caution! Stop roadkill!

Around Okinawa Main Island, June to August is the breeding season for the hermit crab species Coenobita cavipes, designated as a natural monument in Japan. The parent hermit crabs cross roads, especially at dusk and at night, carrying their larvae to release them into the ocean, but many are crushed by cars. When driving near the ocean, we ask all road users to be considerate by reducing their speed to help protect these small creatures.
